About Magikalfingers Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR)

What is Myofascial Release and how does it work?

At Magikalfingers MFR Therapy, I believe that John F Barnes Myofascial Release alone, and/or coupled with other traditional therapies and modalities, are an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

“WHAT IS FASCIA?” (pronounced like fashion = “fashia”)

The fascial system is our only whole-body network, enveloping and connecting every structure and cell. Acting as a glide and communication system, fascia transmits information and energy throughout the body, much like fiber optics. It also plays a crucial role in transporting nutrients, fluids, oxygen, and biochemicals to support cellular health.

Fascia supports postural balance, aids in motion, and acts as a shock absorber. It helps circulate venous and lymphatic fluids and can influence chronic tissue congestion and inflammatory processes. Changes in fascia often lead to the buildup of fibrous tissue and increased acidity in joint areas. Additionally, fascia surrounds the central nervous system and dysfunctions in these areas can cause widespread neurological effects.

Fascia's fluid component, known as ground substance, surrounds every cell and facilitates proper cellular metabolism, respiration, and nutrient flow. Restrictions in the fascia can disrupt these processes, leading to issues like pain, dysfunction, disease, and compromised immune response.

As you can see, fascia is kind of important!

AND, there is nothing else out there like John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach to treat 100% of your fascial system. All other systems only work 20% and produce limited, short term results.

JFB Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle and safe treatment for people of all ages, delivering long-lasting results. It is highly effective in addressing chronic pain and "unexplained" discomfort. MFR helps restore range of motion and flexibility while reducing pain, tightness, and tension. As a hands-on therapy that treats the entire fascial system, MFR provides comprehensive relief and helps you feel better overall!

If you are you ready to come to, or back to the table, show up for yourself, book a series of appointments, do some self care in between, and see how your body responds.

There is nothing like John F. Barnes Myofascial Release!

About My Sessions

Come and explore your body on a whole new level!  Myofascial Release connects on a much deeper level than many other styles of bodywork.

Each Myofascial Release Treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams or machinery. This enables me to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia. Fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or a sweater. Fascia is very densely woven, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein, as well as, all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.) A high percentage of people suffering with pain and/or lack of motion may be having fascial problems, but are not diagnosed. Myofascial Release Therapy  is very different than Massage Therapy. Most clients describe it as very connective.

There are no lotions or lubricants involved. in myofascial release sessions.  This allows me to go deeper, and sink into the barrier without sliding.  I ask my clients to not use any lotions or oils before our sessions together.

Regular treatment is just the beginning. Both follow up care, and self care, are something that will help you reap the benefits of  this investment into your body!

When you have made the decision to make an appointment, or a series of appointments, please reach out.

Your bodies ability to heal is far greater than you can ever imagine!

Believe and you can achieve!

About Me

I have  been an Orthopedic Massage Therapist since 1998. During that time I specialized in treating a variety of conditions of the neck, spine, pelvis, and extremities. I have also treated many pre and post surgical conditions needing soft tissue and myofascial fascial release in my career.

I began my massage practice in the field of Physical Therapy and Chiropractic fields. I am sill in connection with many of these practitioners, and consult with them as necessary if we are working together on a particular goal for a client.

I dove into the world of Myofofascial Release, using the John F Barnes approach, and now it all makes sense! I can see how this type of body work has been the missing link  for the  body to truly become in alignment with itself on a deeper fascial level. There is no force in MFR Therapy, only a gentle melting and unwinding of the tissues that  may be causing fascial restrictions.

This approach is so different than massage, as there are no lubricants involved to be able to grab the tissues at the deepest layers. Myofascial Release is gently, yet it is very therapeutic.

I am quickly, and graciously welcoming this new modality into my practice, and so are my clients!  This gentle melting of the tissues allows me to go deeper with you and help you to understand what  therapeutic pain is, and in many cases the root cause of it. Sometimes the cause may be from somewhere else!

The body tells such a story when you give it the ability to let go. I am here to help facilitate the body's  true abilities  to "unwind" those stubborn fascial restrictions. Sometimes you just need help to start, and continue this process. Pain relief and Emotional balance are achievable.  I can only be the conduit to help you, and your body be on the way to a healthier lifestyle- or to continue on this wonderful path you are already on! I want to encourage you to trust in your body, and its ability it has to heal!

A view of fascia under the skin

My Philosophy

At Magikalfingers MFR Therapy I believe that Fascia is the living web of connective tissue that surrounds and pervades every cell in our body.  From muscle to organ to nerve, fascia plays a crucial role in many areas of the body, and in many cases cause physical changes.  It is essentially "holding us together". But if it is holding us to tight, it can cause deeper issues.

What is fascia?

You can think of facia is like a spider web. The stringy tissue is densely woven throughout your muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, veins and organs. Your fascia is one continuous structure throughout your body. Each part of your body is connected to it in some way. That’s why if there’s a snag in the tissue in one part of your body, it can cause pain in another area.

I find that oftentimes, we are pulled away from what we feel in our body. This means physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

One aspect of myofascial release therapy that touches me deeply is that it gives us the opportunity to find our way back into our bodies. It gives the opportunity to feel the subtleties of ourselves.

We all have our own unique process. If you are interested in exploring yours, I would enjoy assisting you along your journey of self-exploration and curiosity.
I am here for you.

Myofascial Lines And Injuries

Many injuries have lasting impacts on your body but cannot be detected in standardized tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.).  I am able to help you reach your wellness goals by assessing and treating these restrictions.  MFR helps by using gentle pressure applied over an extended time to allow the connective tissue to elongate and release. This, in turn, allows nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues to open up resulting in less pain and increased range of motion. Fascia is connected to everything in the body, and with Myofascial release, I will take my time to gently unwind these areas that may be the root cause of these restrictions.

The Piezeolectric effect

The sustained pressure and stretch used during an MFR treatment is purposeful and powerful. And, it is what allows the piezoelectric effect to occur. The prolonged pressure on the fascia causes a chemical reaction to occur in the cells. The result of this reaction is electrical charges, or the piezoelectric effect.

These electrical charges have a many benefits:

1. Healing injuries: The electrical charges produced in the fascia by the piezoelectric effect may send signals to surrounding cells. These signals act as a messenger to tell cells to increase cellular activity of repair and regeneration to promote healing and recovery of damaged tissue.

2. Tissue recovery: The electrical charges also help tissues heal by stimulating collagen, a protein in the body and the primary building block of fascia. These charges shift the tissue from a restricted and solid state to one that is relaxed and fluid. This helps promote recovery, elasticity, and mobility.

3. Pain regulation: The electrical charges generated during MFR have a pain-relieving effect. It is documented that these charges interact with our nervous system through releasing mechanical pressure of nerve tissue and by nourishing nerve cells. In doing so, nerve tissue can heal and patients can see a great reduction in pain.

Given the sustained gentle pressure to the fascial system during MFR treatment, the piezoelectric effect becomes fundamental to the success of MFR.

The Interluken effect

In Barnes MFR, we sustain stretches for 5 minutes or longer because of a few benefits. Mind you we meet the resistance of the stretch and don't force past it.

First know, a brief on fascia anatomy.

Fascia is comprised of:

1)elastin

2)collagen

3)ground substance

Any releases under 90 seconds is what we refer to as "fools gold". You are just stretching the elastin which is designed to give. If that's all you treat, the elastin will get pulled back into the original dysfunction b/c it's only 20% of the fascial system.

The remaining collagen and ground substance is 80% of the fascial system, and JUST starts to release at the 90-120 second mark. We hold these pressures/stretches longer b/c there are layers of releases.

And at the 5 minute mark, your body begins to increase production of interleukins, a special brand of proteins that work with our tissues and cells. Interleukin 8 and 2 production particularly, that aid in reducing inflammation and increasing immune response.

Interlukin 8, which is a chemokine, is naturally occurring in the body for many different reasons. MFR can also produce interlukin 8, and two other types of interlukins. Interlukin 8 is naturally occurring when inflammation is present and helps bring granulocytes to the site of inflammation. Neutrophils are the granulocytes that interlukin 8 activates, as well as lymphocytes the longer you hold after that 5 minute mark, the interleukin production increases more and more. So you may find us holding stretches or pressures, uninterrupted for 7-15...or more minutes.

this time also allows for a set of phenomena that takes place, starting with:

1)piezioelectricity

2)mechanotransduction

--1 and 2 dovetail together--

3)phase transition

4)chaos

5)finally resonance or release

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at magikalfingers@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Emotions are often referred to as “energy in motion,” a phrase that can be challenging to understand because it lacks practical, anatomical, or scientific explanation.

In the context of bodywork and myofascial release, it can often trigger emotional responses in my clients. But scientifically, how is it possible for us to act as a catalyst for emotional release?

The key lies within the nervous system, which is constantly in communication with the brain.

When an emotional or traumatic event occurs, the amygdala (the part of the brain that assesses and responds to threats) activates and releases cortisol (a stress hormone) into the bloodstream. This, in turn, activates the sympathetic nervous system (the fight-or-flight response).

If we feel unable to express or allow our natural responses—such as crying, shaking, screaming, or fighting—our prefrontal cortex (the brain’s executive center) may override these impulses. It does so by disconnecting different parts of the brain responsible for processing and archiving the event, particularly the hippocampus.

This process is the science of dissociation.

While it may seem to our conscious mind that we have successfully suppressed the emotional response to protect ourselves, our body experiences a different reality. The amygdala and nervous system remain in a heightened state of threat.

When we perform Myofascial Release, we help the body achieve homeostasis by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest-and-digest response). In this state, repressed emotions often rise to the surface, seeking expression.

If you experience this during a session, please know that it is a completely natural—and even common—response.

I understand this as one of the body’s natural ways of processing stress and trauma, particularly after prolonged periods of dysregulation. In fact, I view it as a sign that the treatment is effective!

Your myofascial release session is a safe space for relaxation and recovery, free of judgment. I am here to support you.

The simple answer my teacher John Barnes shares in our training is "it will take as long as it takes" No one has the answer to how many visits it will take. Sometimes we may feel that we are in a perpetual state of healing. What I mean by that is, we are constantly going through the motions of life, regenerating from any hurt that comes up and then repeating the cycle over again. It can feel exhausting at times to keep having to continuously repeat the cycle of healing, and it may leave you wondering if you will ever get to this “fully healed” place that we long to be in. However, despite feeling this way, we may come to realize that being in a constant state of healing is not something that we should feel disappointed in, when we are continuously healing, we are being propelled upward in your growth as an individual.

When we begin looking at healing differently we realize that something needs to change in the current season of ones life. When doing some deep soul-searching, we can realized that when it comes to healing, We cannot expect the healing to be linear. Healing doesn’t happen to you in a straight line, it comes at you in a zigzag formation, with a lot of peaks and valleys that you have to maneuver through.

A lot of us think that healing should happen quickly, but when the healing process is rushed, do you experience true healing? No.

When you rush healing, all you are doing is making your “wound,” deeper, which is only going to cause you to have to experience a longer healing process. You can try covering up how you feel and pushing it to the side, only for it to hit you like a million bricks at a random time and place.

The zigzagginess of healing is how it is meant to happen, so don’t let it discourage you and make you think that you aren’t healing when you are faced with times of sadness or when old feelings get stirred up inside of you. You can still heal and feel sad. You can still heal and feel angry about the situation. You can still heal and not necessarily know what you should be doing at the moment.

I believe that the reason we want to rush the process of healing so badly is that truthfully, healing hurts. I know this from experience. Healing hurts; it’s hard, and at times it is extremely uncomfortable. I can’t think of anyone who willingly wants to go through hard times, hurt, and feeling uncomfortable, but trust me when I say this: Going through the process is worth it because you will come out of it a healed person that has grown from whatever you needed healing from.

Every good thing that is meant to happen in your life needs to take its time, so do not be scared to go through the process of healing, because your future self will thank your present self for doing all of the hard, but ultimately rewarding work that helped shape you into the person that you are growing to be, and it will be completely worth it in the end.

You are worth it. You are loved. You can heal.

Today I am sharing a valid concern some patients may have when first trying Myofascial Release (MFR) therapy.

Q: What should I do if I experience a healing crisis?

A: When a patient goes through a healing crisis (sometimes referred to as therapeutic pain), it may seem alarming. Especially for some that may not understand the powerful mind/body connection within our fascial system, it is important to remember that Myofascial Release (MFR) is never injurious. Should you experience sensations or emotions you may not feel used to, try practicing your home stretches along with frequent MFR appointments. This will help progress your healing process much faster.
.
We encourage you to also spend quality 'you' time through meditation or self-reflection, bringing awareness into your body. Try sinking deeper into emotions that may come to the surface; giving your body permission to feel and let go of what is not serving you.
.
This will feel different for everyone. For some, it may bring up old memories or emotions. For others, this may be a physical experience with twitching, soreness, trembling, sweating, etc. The key is to let yourself go without judgment or holding back.

Myofascial Release for the Whole Person by John F. Barnes, PT

Myofascial release is considered to be the highest order of therapeutic artistry. In addition to it being effective in the resolution of pain and headaches and the restoration of movement, it is also a very effective tool which allows the individual to greatly enhance his or her personal growth and awareness potential.

THE BODY REMEMBERS

To ask how the mind communicates to the body or how the body communicates with the mind assumes that the two are separate entities. My experience has shown me that they are a single unit. The body is not just a reflection of the personality; it is the personality.

Therefore, mind/body awareness are two sides of the same coin, different aspects of the same spectrum, immutably joined, inseparable, connected, influencing and communicating constantly. Myofascial release techniques and myofascial unwinding allow for the complete communication necessary for healing and true growth. I believe that the body remembers everything that ever happened to it.

The link between mind/body awareness and healing is the concept of state-dependent memory, learning and behavior (also called deja vu). For example, we all have experienced this when a certain smell, or the sound of a particular piece of music creates a flashback phenomenon, producing a visual, sensorimotor replay of a past event or important episode in our lives with a vividness as if it were happening at that moment. I would like to expand this theory to include position-dependent memory, learning and behavior, where the structural position of the body in space is the missing component in the state-dependent theory and treatment.

Studies have shown that during periods of trauma, people make indelible imprints of experience that have high levels of emotional content the body can hold information below the conscious level, as a protective mechanism, so that memories tend to become dissociated or a reversible amnesia. The memories are state- or position-dependent and can therefore be retrieved when the person is in a particular state or position. The information is not available in the normal conscious state, and the body’s protective mechanisms keep us away from the positions that our mind-body awareness construes as painful or traumatic.

It has been demonstrated consistently that when a myofascial release technique takes the tissue to a significant position, or when myofascial unwinding allows a body part to assume a significant position three dimensionally in space, the tissue not only changes and improves, but memories, associated emotional states and belief systems also rise to the conscious level. This awareness allows the individual to grasp the previously hidden information that may be creating or maintaining symptoms of behavior which deter improvement. With the information now at the conscious level, the individual is in a position to learn what holding or bracing patterns have been impeding progress. This release of the tissue, emotions and hidden information create an environment for change that is both conscious and effective.

The therapist using the myofascial unwinding process acts as a facilitator, following the body’s inherent motions. When a significant position is attained, the craniosacral rhythm will shut down into a still point. During this still point a reversible amnesia surfaces, replaying all the physiologic responses, memories and emotional states that occurred during a past traumatic event. This dissociation or reversible amnesia is a “double conscious state” *. In other words, what is learned or remembered at the time of trauma is dependent on the psychophysiologic state of the individual at the time of the experience. This dissociation or block between the conscious and subconscious minds is the source of many poor or temporary therapy results. Myofascial release and myofascial unwinding bring the tissue or body part into a position to allow the individual to be fully aware of this divided consciousness. Reactivating the conditions and the resultant physiologic responses during which they were acquired by this flashback phenomenon allows for conscious awareness and then provides the choice to change.

Myofascial release and myofascial unwinding techniques, when coupled with appropriate modalities, mobilization and muscle energy techniques, and exercise and flexibility programs allow us to expand our abilities in helping others.

Anytime we try to describe Barnes myofascial release as focusing on one tissue more than another, we miss the most important point. In my opinion, what John Barnes teaches is an approach to the entire system of fascia, which is the chief organizing system of all the system. And the chief purpose of that organizing system of fascia is communication.

The nervous system is not only housed in the fascia, research has revealed that fascia is legitimately a part of the nervous system.

Nobel prize studies have shown that fascial piezo receptors under the skin channel information of pressure and touch down to the free interoceptive nerve endings, a part of the nervous system. It’s also been shown that in the brain, the fascial glial cells are actively contributing to nervous system communication.

When we approach a person, for whatever reason they come to us, what we’re trying to do when we apply Barnes principles is balance the system so that we can open up any restrictions that are interfering with whole-body communication of information or the function of the mind within the system. This is a total whole body approach and we completely miss the point when we try to talk about the parts separate from whole.

MFR is the Nervous Systems safe haven.“ the nervous system and the fascial system are best friends. When there is a restriction, injury, trauma etc. our nervous system goes into action communicating to the body something is wrong or in need of help/repair. And when this happens our fascial system being their buddy goes into action within milliseconds, protecting guarding restricting movement for protection. As we heal our bodies they should return to balance over time, but sometimes the person needs help to fully allow the body to express any energy that maybe still trapped.

As we use the MFR principles and apply it in our session it aides the fascial system to feel safe (and applied pressure to plasma creates a piezoelectric charge that clears out or connects pathways in the body) and this light steady pressure (3-5 minutes holds) gives the person the opportunity it has not experienced before which will allow the body to begin the thawing process of letting go in pain area or where it needs to let go.

This chain reaction gives the nervous system a chance to regain balance and unwind the body towards freedom. Unwinding the body can (to name a few) release emotion, physical trauma, correct and balance bones because the restriction that was causing the misalignment or compression is freed.

Any of the following results are an indication that your body is restructuring, and normal after an MFR session.

  • Muscle Soreness: You might feel muscle soreness similar to a good workout at the gym. Just keep hydrating and moving through the soreness.
  • Hydration: Be sure to drink twice as much water as you normally would drink; especially for the 2 hours following your session. This will also help prevent headaches after your session.
  • Dreams: You might have strange dreams following your session. These could be your body’s way of unwinding and releasing old traumas.
  • Emotions: Since MFR can release emotions stored in the tissues, your emotions might feel easily triggered. Just allow them to surface and express them in a safe setting.
  • Epsom Salts: If you feel your session was exceptionally intense, soaking in an Epson Salt bath could be soothing.
  • Different Sensations: Sometimes as our bodies shift with MFR, you might be aware of sensations in different areas. Just unwind through, and feel the sensations.

If you have any other results that are not listed? Please feel free to connect with me at any time or e mail me directly. Sometimes, if a session is particularly intense, the dramatic changes in our bodies may trigger a healing crisis. This is a normal part of the full body healing process.

Also, if you have not rebooked your next appointment, please do so as soon as possible. Since our injuries are cumulative, our healing is also cumulative. Receiving weekly (or every-other-week) treatments, along with your home stretches, will increase your healing results.

Yes! Self care is highly recommended! It builds upon our work here in my office. Just 15-20 minutes a day is sufficient.

My standard Myofascial Release session is 90 minutes. This gives time to do focal work on areas of restriction/discomfort/or stress. 120 minutes is Myofascial Release as well as a short massage at the end of treatment in area of concern. I also offer a 3 hour session that is 90 minutes MFR 1 hour massage and 30 minute Cranial Fascial work!

You may undress to your comfort level, but I am trained to drape you with a sheet or towel to maintain your privacy and dignity.

Be gentle with yourself. Many of us have been through a lot in our lives, no matter what age you are, MFR is a beautiful practice to help you gently unwind old traumas and injuries.
